Evolution, Structure and Assembly of the Myelin Sheath

The myelin sheath surrounds nerve fibers and is responsible for the rapid
conduction of the nerve impulse. It is a fascinating "invention," of Nature, having
arisen several times and in different forms in evolution. The sheath, one of the
first biological structures to be examined by electron microscopy over
50 years ago, is now being extensively studied because we are still not
sure how it is synthesized and maintained throughout the life of an organism.
Some models for this will be presented.
